Digital Photography
The major emphasis of this course is for student (s) to become proficient in the use of Adobe Photoshop and the use of a Digital SLR camera. The student(s) will take digital photos and use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate these images to achieve the desired results. The course will be project based. Students will learn Photoshop techniques in the classroom, and then apply those techniques to their Digital Photographs. Students will be expected to have acquired the skills necessary to use computer hardware and software. These skills can be meet by completing the course prerequisite of Technology Foundations or Business Analysis with a grade of "C" or better.

Photo B Project/Assignments

Photo Project #1 - Web Based Random Images

  • Creating Web base images. Using the randomimage.psd file create 5 random images to used on the SHS web site. (See Handout)
  • Shoot a minimum of 15 images, shoot multiple pictures of each subject.
  • Download images to your directory.
  • Create and print a Contact Sheet
  • Resize image to 33%
  • Create 5 random images
  • Post to your proj1.htm web page of your Digital Portfolio.

    100 pts.

Photo Project #2 - Rule of Thirds

    • Using the Photo Composition technique "Rule of Thirds" shoot 10-15 images. (See Handout)
    • Shoot 10-15 images
    • Download to yor Project 2 directory
    • Create and print a Contact Sheet
    • Complete and post images to proj-2.htm of your Digital Portfolio
    • Resize ALL images to 30%

Chapter 3 Mini Project

    • Using the tools you learned in Chapters 2 & 3, Remove, Clone and/or Duplicate parts of an image. Post the completed image and the original to ch3.htm. Use these tools to create a realistic looking image.
      • Image must be a minimum of 5" (five inches wide or tall)
      • Original and Modified image must be less than 100 KB's when posted.
    • Extra Credit - Create a second image. Post the original and the second image below the first. (10 pts. poss.) Points will be earned based on the quality of the job performed.

Chapter 4 Mini Project

  • Using the technigues that were used to create the B&W image with Color on Chapter 4 Salad_Plate, create your own B&W image with Color. Post the original and complete image to your ch4.htm web page.
    • Original and Completed image must be at least 5" (five inches wide or tall)
    • Both images must be less than 100 KB's when posted.
  • Check the guidelines on Page 86 of Chapter 4 Colorizing

Project 3 - HeadShot Photography

  • Shoot 10-15 Head Shot images of a subject. Be sure to get close. Google the term HeadShot Photography to see examples by professional photographers.
    • Shoot multiple images of each subject. (Profiles, Neck-up, Waist-up, Chest-up, etc.)
  • Create a Contact Sheet and print it. Label the Contact Sheet with your name, Period and Project 3.
  • Using Adobe Photoshop create three enhanced Head Shot images.
    • Create a new frame 8.5" x 11" for Portrait or 11" x 8.5" for Landscape oreintation.
      • Transparent Background
      • 150 Resolution
    • Open one of your original images and drag it into the new frame.
      • Position the image (Transform Ctrl+T)
      • Enhance the image using Adjustments (Level, Brightness/Contrast etc.) and Filters (Sharpen)
    • Save the Enhanced image to your project 3 folder with a unique filename.
    • Post the Original and Enhanced images to your proj3.htm webpage. Resize to a thumbnail and link.
  • Resize the original images (DO NOT RESIZE THE ENHANCED IMAGES)
    • Portrait style 8.5" x 12.75"
    • Landscape style 12.75" x 8.
  • Extra Credit
    • Create a fourth enchanced image, but apply Digital Art techniques to the image. Examples might include Colorizing, B&W, Filters, etc. Post the Original and Enhanced image to proj3.htm

Project 3a - Colorize one of your Head Shot Photos

  • Open one of your Enhanced/Modified Head Shot Photos and Colorize it using the techniques that you learned in Antique Image Repair Cop project.

Chapter 5 Mini Project - Creating and Applying a custom Lighting Effect

  • Create a custom Lighting Style and apply it to an image. You may use one of your own images or find an image on the Internet.
    • Image must be a minimum of 5 inches wide or 5 inches in height.
  • Use the techniques that you learned in Chapter 5 for creating and modifying Lighting Styles.
  • Posting the images JPEG High
    • Post and link the original image (before Lighting Style) to your Chapter 5 web page.
    • Post and Link the Modified image (after applying Lighting Style) to Chapter 5.
    25 pts.

Project 4 - Telephoto Lens

  • Use the Canon 70–200 mm or 75-300mm Telephoto Zoom Lens for project 4. In this project you will demonstrate your ability to take photos by zooming in on a subject. Shoot Stop Action and a Zoom sequence.

Project 5 - Magazine Cover

  • Use Adobe Photoshop to create your own Magazine Cover.
    • Create a proj5.htm web page and update the links on your Nav-Bar
    • Adobe Photoshop
      • Create a New File 8.5" x 11" set the resolution to 150, Transparent background.
      • Note: If you use images with resolution less than 150 ppi they will appear smaller in the Magazine cover.
      • You must use the following techniques in your Magazine Cover image.
        1. Background (image, Gradient, Solid Color)
        2. Minimum of three different images.
        3. Minimum of 2 Shape Layers (Shape layers can be used a backgrounds for text examples: Banners, Award labels)
        4. Magazine Title - Use one from the above link or create your own
          1. At least one Layer Style on the Magazine Title
        5. Minimum of three story headlines.
          1. Example: Prep Baseballs Top 20 Recruits
        6. Barcode Label in the Lower Left or Loer Right corner
        7. Date
    • Use all your Photoshop skills to create a professional looking magazine cover.
    • We will be printing this project so make sure you use large images with high resolution. Pixellated images will have poor quality.
    • You may use some of your own images or images from the Internet.
  • 150 pts.

Project 6 - B&W with Color and Filters

Create two images that have a blend of Black and White with color and filters. You must use an image that you shot, not an image from the Internet. The completed images must be 8.5" x 11" or 11" x 8.5". Use any technique that you have learned throughout the semester to complete the project. I have added a link below with a technique to help you complete the project.

Final Project -

Check out a camera with a partner and shoot images for the following techniques - Depth of Field, Stop Action, Rule of Thirds, and Head Shots. Use your time wisely when shooting images. There will very little time if any to re-shoot images during class.

Shooting Images
- You must shoot your own images. Your images must be in numeric order from the camera. You must first shoot all your required images (Depth of Field, Stop Action, Head Shots, Rule of Thirds), then you partner must shoot his/her images.

Download Images
- Return to class and download your images to the Final Project folder.

Create a Contact sheet of your images.
- Add your Name and Period to the Contact Sheet
- Print and Save the Contact Sheet

Posting Images

  1. Select your best image from each of the catagories (DOF, Stop Action, Rule of Thirds, Head Shot)
  2. Create an 11" x 8.5" frame in PhotoShop (Match the image resolution, Transparent background)
    •Drag the image (while holding Shift) into the new frame. Transfrom the image as needed. (CTRL + T)
  3. Enhance the image slightly (be careful not to over do it)
  4. Save the image for Web in your Final Folder
  5. Post the image to your final.htm web page.
    1. Repeat the above steps for all 4 images.

Extra Credit

Using the Photoshop techniques that you learned this past year create a unique image that utilizes one of your own images.

Example might include the use of Filters, Selections, and Adjustments. Post the image in an 11" x 8.5" frame on your final.htm web page below the required images. List the techniques you used to create the image.

  1. Used Pen tool to create a selection
  2. Copied the selection and pasted it into a transparent background. Save the selection as extract.psd
  3. Converted the original image to grayscale using the green channel
  4. Converted the image back to RGB mode
  5. Pasted the extract.psd image into the B&W image and positioned it in place.
  6. Selected the B&W layer. Added the Filter - Find Edges (Filter > Stylize > Find Edges)
  7. Adjusted the Contrast to complete the image.
  8. You may not use this example!!!
