The Beach Boys
Formed in 1961, by 3 brothers(Brian,Dennis, and Carl Wilson) , a cousin(Mike Love), and a good friend(Al Jardine), this band became known as the Beach Boys. Their first hit, was "Surfin'". Dennis came home and told his banded family and friend (they had already formed, but they didn't have any records, singles, or anything out, just had the whole "band" idea and all down) that they should write a song about surfing.
He is one of rock's most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in rock history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most influential pop composers of the last 50 years.
No one expected it. Not in the beginning. Not from Dennis. It was Brian's show. He was the genius. Of course, you'd expect it from him...and you got it. And the others had possibilities. Mike was Brian's collaborator...not an instrumental musician, but he showed a knack as a lyricist, so maybe. Al had started writing early, so maybe he would be the one. Actually, the third Wilson probably showed the most promise. He was the youngest, but he was also the best musician of the group. But not Dennis. Why, they almost didn't let him in the group. The only surfer of the bunch, he was usually at the beach. Not a lot of time for practicing with a band.
Carl Wilson, guitarist, singer and founding member of the Beach Boys, died Friday in Los Angeles from lung cancer. Wilson, 51, had been undergoing treatment for both lung and brain cancer since being diagnosed in the spring of 1997. In spite of his health concerns, Wilson continued to perform with the Beach Boys throughout 1997. Wilson was surrounded by family members at the time of his death, which came just two months after the passing of Wilson's mother Audree. Wilson is survived by his wife, Gina and two sons, Jonah and Justyn.
Born on March 15, 1941 in Los Angeles, California, Mike wrote the lyrics to The Beach Boys' first song, "Surfin'," released in 1961. He then co-authored eleven Top 10 singles in five years with cousin Brian Wilson, a string of hits including "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "Help Me Rhonda," "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations."
Jardine was born in Lima, Ohio on September 3, 1942. A few years later, he moved to Hawthorne, California, where he met Brian Wilson in high school. He played bass guitar on the Beach Boys' first recording, the 1961 song "Surfin'," but quit soon after its release to become a dentist, to be replaced by David Marks. Jardine returned to the band in 1963. |
