Calendar for Sophomores and Freshman

September

Check high school courses that fall under your pathway.
Meet with your coordinator to review classes, pathways, grades, etc.
Clarify your college and career plans. Continue studying hard.
Check high school courses. Will you meet college requirements?
Check announcements and sign up for college representatives' visits.
Get involved in activities; genuine involvement in one is better than token participation in several.
Find out your Social Security number - you'll need it for college applications and testing registration.

October

Sophomores register for the PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) for practice.
Register for the PSAT.
Attend the career/college night.
Read PSAT Student Bulletin. Take the practice test and score it.
Attend college representative presentations - go to college fairs.
Develop lists of your interests.

November

Explore college opportunities through the following means:
- Visiting with the college reps that come on campus.
- Attending college day and night programs.
- Read college resources in college counseling room.
Make a list of colleges that meet your goals and interest.
Involve your parents in the college choice process.
Put forth your best academic efforts in these last two years. It is never too late to improve your grades!
Register for the SAT if you are interested in a U.C. Honors program.

December

Review your PSAT scores.
Read Taking the SAT. (Available in the Career Center)
Talk with graduates home from college regarding college life, how they like their school, courses, etc.

January

Continue career exploration.
Prepare for semester exams; colleges look at your junior grades.
Plan and take the SAT I and SAT II or the ACT.

February

Plan senior year courses; do they meet colleges' requirements?
Begin the college search. Visit some campuses.
Begin to work on your "self evaluation" and "high school activity" sheets. (See Appendix)

March

Register for SAT I or the ACT for May and June.
Ask your counselor about summer enrichment programs.
Consider taking the SAT II Tests in courses you are taking this year.
Complete your senior schedule with your counselor.
Work hard in your present courses.

April

Develop a preliminary list of colleges that interest you and write to them for information.
Listen to college presentations.
Plan visits to colleges that interest you or have a focus on your career goals.
Work on your writing skills.

May

Attend any college fairs in the area.
Identify teachers whom you can ask for recommendations.
Take SAT or ACT Tests.
Make a profile of colleges that interest you; use Barrons' The College Handbook, college catalogs, visit the college/career center at SHS, and other resources available.
Check out different careers and find out what post-secondary education and/or training is needed.

June

Prepare for finals.
Take SAT I, SAT II, or ACT tests.
Continue the college search and discuss with your counselor.
Plan summer visits to colleges.
If you don't have a job, try volunteering in your career area (community service hours).
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER VACATION.
Visit some campuses of your top colleges.
Compose rough drafts of your college essays.
Gather work samples for PORTFOLIOS for job interviews.
READ, READ, READ.
