Calendar for Sophomores and Freshman

September

Check high school courses that fall under your pathway.
Register for the SAT I, SAT II, or ACT (Note early deadline for the October exam). SCHOOL CODE FOR THE SAT I, SAT II, OR ACT EXAMS: (JVHS-051989 RHS-052672)
Check senior courses. Do they meet the requirements?
Check announcements and sign up for college representatives' visits.
Write for college applications.
Find out exactly what forms, test results, etc., are necessary to apply to all colleges in which you are interested.
Begin first drafts of any essays required.
Reduce your preliminary list of colleges to a manageable number.
Check your PSAT scores to see if you are a National Merit Scholar.

October

Further develop essays for your applications.
Review your transcript with your counselor.
Review for the SAT. (Career Center has copies of Taking the SAT I or SAT II)
Attend college representative presentations/visit campuses.
Attend College/Career Night on Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at RHS.
Attend programs for seniors and parents - go to college fairs.
Find out names of former students attending colleges that interest you.
Ask teachers for recommendations.
Begin filling out college applications.
Check application deadlines.

November

Take SAT I, SAT II, or ACT Tests. Do you want your scores sent to additional colleges?
If required, ask teachers to complete recommendation forms. Provide them with a stamped, addressed envelope.
If you are applying under an "early decision" program, you must submit the application now.
Pick up financial aid applications after Thanksgiving.
UC/CSU application deadline is November 30th.

December

Take SAT I, SAT II, or ACT Tests. SCHOOL CODE FOR SAT/ACT EXAMS: (JVHS-051989 RHS-052672)
Complete all applications for admission.
Talk with graduates home from college.
Check announcements for scholarships.

January

Finish any other college applications.
Attend financial aid workshops.
Complete scholarship applications.
Complete the Student Aid Application for California.
Check with your references - have they sent recommendations?

February

Have mid-year transcripts been sent?
Check announcements for scholarship information.
Have you sent in all applications? Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid? Have you filled out a GPA Verification Form to qualify for Cal Grants?

March

Explore the colleges you have applied to as thoroughly as possible.
Register for Advanced Placement Tests if you are taking them.
Have you reviewed the SAAC (Student Aid Application for California) Acknowledgement and the Student Aid Report from the Pell Grant Program?
If you applied to the University of California or California State University, you should hear by mid-March. Private colleges send acceptances throughout the Spring, before mid-April.

April

Review your acceptances and financial aid offers with your counselor.
Check about housing opportunities at your colleges.
Wait to hear from all the colleges before you make your final decision.
Visit the college of your choice before you make your final decision.
Notify the college of your choice.

May

Notify the schools that you decided not to attend.
Keep your counselor informed of you decisions and the scholarships you receive.
Send your Pell Grant Student Aid Report to your chosen college - keep a copy for your records.
Check on placement exams at various colleges.
Take Advanced Placement exams if you want college credit for your courses.
Prepare a budget for the following year.
If necessary, apply for a student loan at a local bank.
Apply for a summer job to help pay for college costs.

June

Order Final Transcripts to be sent to the University or College of your choice.
GRADUATION.
