20 points maximum per month allowed.
- Three options are available for extra credit. You can mix and match whatever of these you’d like.
- Newspaper or Magazine Articles (4 to 6 pts. max. per article)
- Attach each article to the left-hand page of the ScrAPESbook in such a way that it does not stick out of the ScrAPESbook when it is closed. Write the bibliographic reference for the article at the top of the page.
- Articles MUST be from a valid impartial, well-known news source.
- Articles Cut-out of a newspaper or magazine will earn 6 points max. Articles printed from a website will earn 4 points max.
- Handwrite a one-page analysis of the article on the opposite page. Emphasize the relevance to the course of the article.
- Articles must be spaced about 5-10 days apart and must be from that month.
- Website Analysis (2-3 pts. max per website)
Research examples of websites that include information relevant to the course. Affix a printout of the homepage of the website to the left-hand page of the ScrAPESbook in such a way that it does not stick out of the ScrAPESbook when it is closed.
- Handwrite a ½ page description and review of the website on the right-hand page.
- Include the URL of the homepage of the website on the printout.
- You may receive up to 5 points for each website.
- You may not receive duplicate credit for more than one webpage from a website.
- Podcast (2-3 pts. max per podcast)
Listen to podcasts about an environmental science related topic.

- Pocasts MUST be current in the month the ScAPESbook is due.
- Further Abroad (20 points max per event)
Record your participation in activities or events relevant to the course
- Each activity must be approved.
- Handwrite a 1 page description of the activity or event in a reflective, journaling style that includes both personal reflections and an explanation of how it related to the course.
- Attach 3 pictures (you must be on 1 of the pictures)
- Attach 1 artifact (brochure, receipt, ticket stub etc)
Pre-approved options for this section:
- Recycle bottles and cans . Show receipt for at least $10. 2 pictures and a 1 page write-up.
- Donate old clothes and items to Goodwill . 5 bags or lg. items minimum. Copy of receipt, 2 pictures and 1 page write-up.
- Farmer’s Market . Buy locally grown fruits, vegetables and other items. Talk to farmers are their food—organic, sustainable farming etc.
- Go Vegetarian for 3 weeks. Research healthy ways to eat. Document menus, alternative foods to meat, reactions of your family/friends, challenges, and results.
- Placerita Canyon Nature Center . Must attend an organized activity such as a docent led hike, animal presentation, amphitheater talk etc. Focus on ecosystem roles and challenges.
- Feline Conservation Center in Rosamond or Gibbons Conservation Center in Saugus. Both have endangered species breeding programs. Check website for tours and directions.
- Beach/River Clean-up . Participate
- Environmental Fair . Attend
- Hydro-electric Dam Tour (i.e. Hoover Dam near Vegas) or Wind-Farm Tour (i.e. Palm Springs).
- National Park . Focus on land management issues, conservation, concerns. Interview Park Ranger.
- Aquarium or zoo visit (San Diego Zoo and Monterey Bay Aquarium are the best for conservation). MUST find and document conservation efforts, education programs, endangered species.
