Art 1A is a one-semester course and is designed to give all students a basic foundation in art. The student will get an opportunity to learn basic concepts in art through working with several types of art mediums. This course will serve to develop increasing awareness, understanding, and appreciation of art, through the study of famous artists and their works of art. All beginning students should be able to experience success. For some of the students, it will provide the inspiration needed to continue studies within the field of art.

Grading Policy:
Grading is done on a point scale. Longer, more involved assignments will be worth more points. Shorter projects and exercises are worth fewer points. Assignments will include projects, exercises, tests/quizzes, and a report. Craftsmanship, creativity, and aesthetic qualities will be the basis of grades issued. Individual ability of the student will also be considered. An excellent attitude, commitment, and perseverance in all areas of the class will help to achieve a good grade, as well as, good work!

- Art History
- Review and practice drawing fundamentals
- Hand study drawings
- Still life studies
- Shading/Value Studies
- The use of oil pastels
- Watercolor techniques
- Pen and ink techniques
- Design concepts explored
- Using and creating with Scratch-board
- Using and creating with charcoal
- Color theory will be reviewed

The assignments related to the above topics will emphasize both technique and art elements: line, color, value, shape/form, space and texture. Students will be encouraged to choose several of their best works from this class and include them in their portfolio.

GRADING
All assignments will be graded on a point scale. Longer, more involved projects will be worth more points and shorter projects and exercises are worth fewer points. The grade will reflect the students quality of work, following directions, craftsmanship, originality, and effort in class. Grades will be computed by averaging project grades, homework sketches, current events, and quizzes.
Computer Calculations will work as follows: 89.5% - above= A 79.5% - 89.4%= B 69.5% - 79.4%= C 59.5% - 69.4%= D 0 - 59.4%= F
The Class Assignment Break Down is as follows:
Homework= 5% of the total grade
Art History= 10% of the total grade
Class Work= 75% of the total grade
Semester Final= 10% of the total grade

EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit may be turned in only when the required assignments are satisfactorily completed. Extra credit opportunities will be announced and

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to be polite and courteous at all times to the teacher and to the other students. Students need to be in class on time, in their assigned seats, and ready to begin working when the bell rings. The school and district attendance and tardy policies will be strictly followed in this class. Attendance is important and is directly related to the students' success in this class. Food and drinks (water bottles permitted) will not be allowed in the classroom.
