Description

This course is an introduction course for students who have none or little prior knowledge in Mandarin Chinese language. 

It is to develop students’ four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese language, as well as gaining understanding of Chinese culture. 

Pinyin (phonetic symbols) will be used as a supplementary tool to learn the spoken language. Basic strokes will be introduced and used for writing Chinese characters. Students will be learning simplified characters.

Computer-based technology and online course materials are an integral part of the instruction in this class. Students will be able to write by hand and on the computer. Please check the calendar and other files for assistance with this class.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to

  • Develop basic conversational abilities(pronunciation, fundamental grammatical patterns, common vocabulary, and standard usage)
  • Build basic reading and writing skills
  • Get an understanding of Chinese culture
