Biology A/B - Periods 2 & 3 Assignments

Position Statement - how do you feel about the Yellowstone wolves?  Follow the directions on the handout to write an essay that explains both sides of the issue and states your opinion, supported with evidence.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be starting our Ecology unit with a project about the wolves in Yellowstone National Park.  Here is the objectives page for this chapter.

Should the wolves be removed from Yellowstone National Park? This is the essential question for our in-class research and debate project. We debate the issue tomorrow!

Read and annotate the article titled "Wolf Restoration Continued."  Summarize each section in the summary boxes that are provided; use the questions in each summary box to guide your reading.

 

Additionally, define vocabulary words on the last page of the article.  In each section, choose several of the underlined words and use a dictionary to find the definitions.

and answer the corresponding questions.

Create a food web of the Yellowstone ecosystem by drawing arrows to connect the plants and animals on this page.  Label the organisms that have a picture as a producer, herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore.

What would happen if the wolves were completely eliminated from the Yellowstone food web?  Well, that's exactly what happened.  Read this timeline, then define the terms and answer the questions on the back.

To learn the main topics from sections 17-2 & 17-3, we are doing a poster project.  Each group was assigned a different topic for their poster.  We will be doing a gallery walk tomorrow (3/7) to fill out a chart with important information from each poster.  Students will then need to write a paragraph summary of the important facts from these two sections of the textbook.

Read and take notes on section 17-1 in the textbook.  Use the questions from the powerpoint to guide yourself through the text.  Write a summary for homework - this will be checked on Monday.

Click through the site and answer the questions as you follow along.  This computer lab will be turned in with your chapter 17 packet.

Over the next few days we will be completing the "Breeding Bunnies" Lab.  Here is the lab report packet, as well as a powerpoint of some background information on the lab set-up.

 

The lab is due Tuesday, February 28th.  If you were absent for data collection, you should use the make-up data to complete your data table, make your calculations and your graph.

Today we took notes from the textbook on section 16-3. The powerpoint file has questions to guide you through the section. Write a paragraph to summarize the information in section 16-3 for homework.

We also read section 16-1 in the textbook and took notes on a worksheet.  Make sure you write a summary of the notes.

Lab: Rock Pocket Mouse Evolution

 

First, read the background information on the assignment.  Then, open the pdf file of the mouse data sheets - there are 4 cards of different images of mice in two locations. Follow the directions on the assignment (count how many light mice and dark mice are in each location on each card; then, try to arrange the cards in chronological order, from oldest to most recent).

Answer the questions while you watch the video. Then complete the rest of the assignment - draw the 2 bar graphs and answer the questions.

GMO Poster Project

 

Remember, in class tomorrow you will be making your GMO poster to use in the "Gallery Walk" on Friday, Feb. 3rd.  If you are printing out information or images to use on your poster, you must do so BEFORE class on Thursday.

Mitosis, Cell Cycle, and Cancer Internet Lesson - this was completed in class today.  Finish for homework.  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Finish the fermentation lab (balloons and cellular respiration) - we will be peer grading this tomorrow in class.

Chapter 9 objectives were done in class today after the photosynthesis test.  Vocabulary for chapter 9 is due on Thursday, 10/20.

The photosynthesis test is TOMORROW (10/18). Remember, this test is NOT multiple choice, so make sure you've studied the review questions we did in class today. I've attached the questions so that you can look them over tonight.

Complete the objectives and then define the vocabulary words on a separate sheet of paper. 

Diffusion Online Demonstration - we watched the video in class today.  Complete the lab analysis and conclusion to be turned in on Monday.

Smelly Balloons Activity - finish the questions and conclusion paragraph from the diffusion activity we did today in class.

Cell Foldable Project - finish the booklet on all of the cell's organelles.  Make sure to study the functions of the cell parts for tomorrow's QUIZ.

Chapter 7 Vocabulary - define all terms listed on the back of the chapter 7 objectives page.  Definitions can be found within the chapter and/or in the glossary of the textbook.  Definitions must be handwritten (NOT typed).

Chapter 2 objectives - complete this assignment and use it as a study guide for the chapter 2 exam, which is scheduled for Monday, September 12th.

Ch 2 Exam Review - EXTRA CREDIT, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to study for the Exam that is on Monday, 9/12.
