American Literature

Course Description

In this course, students will explore the fascinating world of American Literature. Through lecture, discussion, and readings, students will discover the changing patterns of American thought. Students will encounter new authors and perhaps get reacquainted with some that they have previously read. They will continue to develop their communication skills and to build their vocabulary. Students will be engaged in the material through the Common Core State Standards framework, which will focus on close readings of texts, argumentation strategies and practice, and Socratic discussions.

9/16/15--Class Info

Today we continued with our reading of Act 1. Make sure you pay attention during the reading. Ask questions for clarity as we read. You will quiz very soon.
HW: 1. Q1 terms due October 15. 2. Word Crime #4 due Friday. 3. Vocab squares list 2 due Friday. 4. Act 1 Questions will be collected at the end of Act 1.

9/15/15--Class Info

Agenda:
*Period 2 began with listed the severity of personal offenses found in The Crucible from 1-10. Periods 4,6,7 began with discussing the excerpts from the overture. I collected the Overture annotations and the jigsaw activity.
*I gave you questions for Act I of The Crucible...no annotations this time (insert cheering here), but you do need to pay close attention during the readings in class, especially when I stop to point something out to you. You will be completing the questions as we read along. They will be collected at the end of the act.
*We began reading Act 1. Some people volunteered to read parts, others were assigned. I gave you a copy of Act 1 that you can keep and write on, but it is also in your textbook.
HW: 1. Q1 terms due October 15. 2. Word Crime #4 due Friday. 3. Vocab squares list 2 due Friday. 4. Begin answering Act 1 questions.

Agenda:
*Word Crime #4--due Friday...remember to write in MLA format the source citation for the source(s) you consult for the answers to the Word Crimes.
*Vocab List 2 is the vocab focus for this week. You need to do vocab squares for List 2 (given to you last week)--due Friday. Quiz on Friday.
*For periods 4,6,7--we finished the share out of major points for "Why I Wrote the Crucible" and I collected it.
*You each were assigned a short excerpt from the Overture of Act 1 of "The Crucible" and had to complete the analysis on the handout. By the end of the period you should have had all 5 questions completed by sharing out and teaching your group members your excerpt analysis. Period 2 shared out and had these collected. Periods 4,6,7 will share out and have these collected tomorrow.
