American Literature

Course Description

In this course, students will explore the fascinating world of American Literature. Through lecture, discussion, and readings, students will discover the changing patterns of American thought. Students will encounter new authors and perhaps get reacquainted with some that they have previously read. They will continue to develop their communication skills and to build their vocabulary. Students will be engaged in the material through the Common Core State Standards framework, which will focus on close readings of texts, argumentation strategies and practice, and Socratic discussions.

**Sorry this is late getting to the website. I had a family emergency that prevented me from getting this up sooner.**
*For periods 2 and 4, we had a graded class discussion. I then had to leave work so Periods 6 and 7 chose 5 questions from the discussion sheet and wrote a paragraph response for those 5 questions. For full credit on each response, you need to make sure you use examples from the class to support your answers.
*the Q1 terms need to be typed to turn in on Friday. You need to tell me what each term is and what does it do. So, definition and function.

*Today we had peer editing of your 2nd draft of your rhetorical analysis. I modeled how I grade your papers. You need to make sure you are focusing on a single quality that has influence the identity of America, and analyze how three rhetorical strategies are used to develop that quality in the piece you have chosen. Make sure you read the "Tips for Success" handout that I included on the second page of your assignment sheet.
