Course Description

AQUATIC FITNESS                                                                                                     Grade 9 -12

Fulfills the Physical Education requirement for graduation

The primary purpose of this class, a PE elective, is to learn and practice the basic strokes, starts, turns, and finishes used in competitive swimming today. Since the pool will be available to us during only 30 of the 90 days, classroom time and dry-land activities will be an important part of the class. In the classroom we will focus on rules, health and nutrition, training and competition strategies, video footage analysis, team building, and leadership skills. We will also examine some of the concerns, breakthroughs and controversies in the sport. Dry-land activities will follow a routine aimed at teaching the importance of warming up, flexibility, strength, endurance, and loosening down. This class acts as an off-season program for competitive swimmers and a means of training semi-experienced swimmers to potentially make the spring team. Due to demand and limited pool space, times or tryouts may be required. This class is not designed for non-swimmers.
